When Spellman “Spell” Jackman died in a freak accident on the Charles River, the family was torn over whether to tell their father the tragic news. The retired state Senator was due to celebrate his 87th birthday on Friday and he was not doing well.

All mourners had to refrain from contacting the father, including by email. The senator still enjoyed trading messages with his family—Spell in particular—as well as a few up-and-comers seeking political know-how. He was recovering from a broken hip and his lungs were failing, among other issues. The news would surely kill him.

The inexplainable issue was that someone was sending the father emails from Spell’s account. What’s more, the spammer used the salutation 'Dads' to start the notes, which was how Spell addressed his father, a childhood leftover that never died.
